Overview

In July 1854, the East India Company’s Court of Directors issued a directive to the Governor-General of India, proposing the creation of universities in Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. Following this vision, the University of Calcutta was established on January 24, 1857. Initially modeled after the University of London, the university evolved over time, adapting its structure to meet regional needs and academic aspirations. Today, it stands as a prestigious institution, renowned for its rich legacy and contributions to higher education in India.
